Diminishing Altcoin Seasons: Why Future Gains May Fall Short of Past Cycles (Eric Krown Youtube Summary)
The crypto market’s history of explosive altcoin runs is well-documented — but a closer look at macro trends reveals that each cycle may be offering less in return, not more. Here's a breakdown of what current patterns suggest about the altcoin landscape and what to expect moving forward.
The Bitcoin Dominance Myth
The Bitcoin dominance chart is often used as a compass for predicting altcoin performance. But despite its vertical climb since late 2022, we've still seen isolated altcoin booms — particularly in AI tokens, agents, and meme coins.
This contradiction highlights a key insight: Bitcoin dominance is not a reliable indicator of altseason. Instead, it may be more of a distraction than a useful signal.
A Better Gauge for Altcoin Opportunities
To get a clearer read on potential altcoin rallies, it’s more useful to track specific altcoins versus Bitcoin — particularly those showing strength on the daily timeframe or trading above their 21/55 EMAs. These pairings give a more accurate picture of whether an altcoin is likely to outperform BTC in the near term.
Another strong alternative: analyzing the total crypto market cap excluding Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins, relative to BTC. This chart strips away the noise and better reflects pure altcoin momentum.
The Trend: Diminishing Returns
A multi-cycle view reveals a consistent pattern: each altseason is producing smaller returns than the last.
2017 (ICO Era): The peak of altseason mania, fueled by unregulated ICOs, saw a nearly 3,000% gain from bottom to top.
2021 (DeFi, NFTs, L2s): A strong cycle but smaller in scale — just a 433% gain, a 37% drop from the previous cycle.
2024 (AI, Meme Coins): The most recent alt rally came in at around 63%, down ~32% from 2021.
This consistent shrinkage signals diminishing returns across cycles, likely due to increasing regulation and a savvier investor base.
Key Takeaways
Altseasons Are Getting Weaker: Each new cycle produces lower highs and less momentum, showing a clear long-term downtrend.
Old Narratives Don’t Resurrect: Coins that led one cycle (e.g., ICOs in 2017 or DeFi in 2021) rarely lead the next. Expect new narratives — not old favorites — to drive future rallies.
Past Leaders Often Lag: Even major names like Ethereum have failed to outperform BTC from one cycle to the next. Most older altcoins only produce weak bounces and fail to reach previous highs.
Momentum Is Breaking Down: On high timeframes, altcoin-related market cap charts are breaking structure, with momentum indicators (RSI, stochastic, etc.) pointing lower. Bounces may come, but a full reversal looks unlikely in the near term.
What This Means for Traders
If you're hunting for the next big altseason, temper your expectations. Future rallies may still happen, but they are likely to be smaller, shorter, and narrower in scope. The days of “everything pumps” are probably behind us.
Focus on:
New narratives (not 2021 or 2017 leftovers)
Alt/BTC pairings
Macro momentum (not just daily chart hype)
In short: altcoins aren’t dead — but the game has changed.
Bottom Line: The best approach now is targeted and tactical, not blind belief in another euphoric altseason. The market is evolving, and so should your strategy.
